This was going to be a short text post, but I got a little carried away…
I still can’t stop thinking about the Yeezus show. I’ve been to a lot of great concerts and seen some great performers, but this was on another level. You can’t compare it to other hip-hop shows because it was more like a broadway production or a modern art piece.
I keep having to remind myself that Kendrick Lamar opened the show because Kanye’s performance made him seem completely forgettable. Kendrick is arguably the best rapper in the game right now, but his live show is a little disappointing. This is my 3rd time seeing him and I always notice the same problem. Kendrick’s live performances sound nothing like his records. He shouts into the microphone, skips lyrics, and occasionally gets offbeat. He’s still entertaining, but he could definitely use some polishing.
Kanye’s performance was a completely different story. As soon as he emerged from the shadows and jumped into the first verse of “On Sight,” the crowd was mesmerized. The whole show was just so theatrical and lavish. I’d never seen anything like it before. It was everything you’d ever want from a Kanye West show, but somehow even better. I just wish I could relive the experience.
